Background

The Jesus Movement responded to 1960s era disillusionment with a new breed of Christian music that sounded much more like popular rock on the radio than anything that had ever become part of a Sunday service.  Names like Phil Keaggy and Petra initially gained some recognition in the early– to mid– 1970s, and top-selling Christian artist of all time Amy Grant became one of the first to cross over from Gospel to more secular recordings from the ‘80s into the ‘90s. In the early 2000’s, Christian music had come into its own as a generation longed for a real way to express a faith in God that somehow died among rashes of

highly-publicized scandals and media attacks.  The Christian music offered a disarming kind of comfort for those who had been perhaps hurt by a bad church experience or tainted by the aftermath of a former era’s anti-authority attitudes.  Contemporary Christian music was and remains a comfort to both churchgoers and those who aren’t quite ready to return to regular corporate worship.  Like Jesus, the universal language of music transcends church walls and cultural barriers.

Arguably, fewer regions of the United States have been harder squelched by a lack of prayerful fervor than Boston.  New England simply isn’t like many parts of the United States, in unique challenges to the spiritual walk here.  The media, with largely negative coverage of events, has contributed to the negative aura surrounding Massachusetts culture and social life, and that is particularly one of the reasons two then-Gordon College students were active in the grassroots Boston FM Project in 2005.

With regular broadcasts on WNSH-AM 1570, the Boston FM Project captured the imaginations of Christians throughout New England.  Finally, Christian music was on the airwaves.  The project’s goal was to help connect Christian radio enthusiasts together and set the dream in motion.

Almost a decade later, some of the same servants active in the Boston FM movement have united once again to pursue God’s calling for their lives– sharing the love of God with Boston through Christian music.
